This new reality series takes the old Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares format and applies it the stately homes of England. To kick things off, the Junoesque hotelier Ruth Watson descended on Cothay Manor in Somerset, a fine 1485 pile lovingly restored over the past dozen years by Alastair and Mary-Anne Robb, aged, respectively, 78 and 68.

Neither could understand why none of their children fancied inheriting it. Watson got it at once. The true inheritance would be a million-pound inheritance tax bill, a potential feud with your siblings, and a business haemorrhaging cash. Watson's view was that subconsciously the couple wanted their deaths to cause maximum trouble.

After a successful garden sculpture open day and an attempt at mass catering, the light began dawning on Mary-Anne, albeit extremely slowly. "I know," she mused, "food is becoming increasingly popular." By next summer Cothay Manor should be a proper tourist draw. Or, as the Robbs might put it, ruined. As often with British reality shows, it is the clash of class that adds the spice.
